Adopt a Forest, Mama Rachel Ruto urges 13th Parliament spouses

The First Lady of Kenya, Mama Rachel Ruto, on Friday called on the spouses of the members of the 13th National Assembly to adopt a forest in their constituencies as a measure of reversing the adverse effects of climate change.

Speaking during a breakfast meeting attended by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Kenya Dr. William Samoei Ruto at State House, Nairobi, Mama Rachel Ruto noted that Climate Change is an issue that is affecting everyone and requires collaborative intervention.

“It would be nice if we partner together on greening this country. Climate Change is an issue that is affecting everyone. I have adopted Kakamega Forest as part of my response to Climate Change and would like to encourage each of you to adopt a forest in your constituency or better still create one, where none exists. Together we can achieve our goal of increasing the tree cover in Kenya from the current 8% to 30%,” Mama Rachel Ruto said.

The agenda of the meeting, which had representation from every corner of the country, was to explore areas of partnership between Mama Doing Good, an initiative of the First Lady, and the spouses as they support their partners to deliver in their constituents.

His Excellency the President, Dr William Samoei Ruto expressed his commitment to work with every member of parliament for the benefit of Wananchi. Further, the President urged the spouses to support their Members of Parliament by taking up initiatives geared towards increasing the forest cover in Kenya.

“Greening Kenya is a collective effort, it is not so much a president’s initiative. We all need to be committed to reverse the effects of Climate Change,” President Ruto said.

The CEO of Mama Doing Good, Dr. John Chumo urged the spouses of the members of the 13th National Assembly to join hands with the Office of The First Lady to transform the lives of women in their constituencies through Mama Doing Good organisation.

“With your support, and that of your spouses in parliament, we can transform the lives of women in this country,” Dr. Chumo said.

On their part, the spouses expressed their willingness to collaborate with the Office of The First Lady and its initiatives through Mama Doing Good.

“We are ready to collaborate with the Office of The First Lady on the Climate Action agenda, as well as in many other initiatives undertaken by this Office,” said Mrs Electina Wasike Wanyonyi, the chairperson of the National Assembly Lady Spouses Association of Kenya.

During the breakfast meeting, the Mama Doing Good organisation presented a cheque worth Ksh 100,000 to Mrs Doris Mugambi in support of her tree growing initiative in Buuri constituency.
