Mama is a swahili word that is used globally to mean ‘Mother’. Motherhood is a complex mosaic of love, discipline, warmth and nurturing that embodies the hopes, dreams and concerns for the future.

Who We Are

MaMa Doing Good is a grassroots organisation that focuses on women, children and vulnerable persons in Kenya. We play a pivotal role as a catalyst, stirring action and achievement towards inclusivity, and socio-economic transformation.

The inspiration behind MaMa Doing Good was born in 1997 and actualised in 2009 through Her Excellency Mama Rachel Ruto’s flagship programme, Joyful Women Organisation.

The organisation has grown from 60 women to over 250,000 women in over 17,000 groups operating across Kenya, revolving over USD 30 Million.

Our programmes are structured around three strategic pillars – Joyful Women Organisation,  Voice of Children and Tuombeni Kenya.

Our Patron

Her Excellency Mrs. Rachel Ruto, First Lady of the Republic of Kenya, is driven by an unyielding passion for uplifting women and children. A devoted teacher at heart, she embodies compassion and advocacy, tirelessly amplifying the voices of children and ensuring their needs are central to Kenya’s development agenda.

Her work as a champion for the School Meals Coalition and Clean Cooking initiatives underscores her steadfast commitment to safeguarding children’s health, education, and future while advancing sustainable, climate-smart solutions for families and communities. She firmly believes that access to clean energy and safe cooking solutions is fundamental to public health, environmental conservation, and women’s economic empowerment.

Her Excellency Mrs. Rachel Ruto is a distinguished thought leader in Environment and Climate Action, Financial Inclusion, and Women’s Empowerment. She merges intellectual rigor with hands-on activism, ensuring that policy translates into meaningful impact at the grassroots level.

Through The Voice of the Children Initiative, she champions the rights and wellbeing of Kenya’s children by advancing three core pillars: Provision, Protection, and Participation. The initiative works to ensure that every child has access to essential services such as nutrition, education, and healthcare; is safeguarded from harm, neglect, and exploitation; and is empowered to actively participate in decisions that shape their lives and future.

As Founder of Mama Doing Good and pioneer of the Joyful Women Organization (JOYWO), she has revolutionized economic empowerment for rural women through table banking, transforming communities and inspiring hope.

At the continental level, Her Excellency serves as a member of the Steering Committee of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), where she contributes to shaping Africa-wide strategies that advance women’s leadership, health, education, and economic inclusion.

Beyond policy and advocacy, Mrs. Ruto is a woman of deep faith—unapologetically devoted to her Christian values and fervent in prayer for Kenya’s prosperity.

Her love for gardening and farming mirrors her belief in nurturing growth, both in the soil and in society. A hands-on advocate for sustainable agriculture, she sees farming as a tool for climate resilience, food security, and economic empowerment, often linking her green initiatives to her vision for a thriving nation.

Her pioneering contributions have earned her prestigious accolades, including the State Commendation of Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH), Kenya’s second-highest civilian honor; an Honorary Fellowship for Women Empowerment from Binary University in Malaysia; and the 2023 KISS Humanitarian Award in recognition of her transformative impact.

She was also appointed by the African Union Commission and the World Economic Forum as one of the Champions of the AU Decade on Women’s Economic Empowerment and Financial Inclusion in 2021. These honors celebrate her relentless dedication to uplifting marginalized communities and shaping inclusive policies across Africa.

Born on 20th November 1969, the First Lady began her education at Likuyani Primary School and proceeded to Butere Girls Secondary School in Kakamega County. She holds a Bachelor of Education degree from Kenyatta University and a Master of Arts in Development Studies from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.

Her Excellency is deeply committed to nurturing children and empowering women to take their rightful place at the centre of social and economic transformation.
